You can best explore Middelburg and the surrounding area by foot or on a bicycle. We recommend that you walk through the city and then take the bicycle to see the surroundings on a lovely afternoon. You can easily combine these two in one day. Or you can enjoy breakfast in town and then bicycle towards the beach and the woods and back again in the late afternoon for a drink on a terrace.
You can do this any time of year, but winter is our favorite.
Cycle along the coast of Walcheren and venture into the beautiful villages you will encounter. The route leads through the forest, across the dike and along the beach. Why not take a break at Kasteel Westhove, or in Domburg's delightful centre, before continuing your journey past the Westkapelle lighthouse? It is a lovely ride of about 50 km that is definitely worth the effort.
The best way to explore Middelburg and its surroundings is by bike. Follow beautiful routes that guide you along the coast and through the forest and abundant farmlands. Start your journey in the city along the old bunker route that leads to Dishoek Beach. From there, you can follow a lovely loop leading you past the boulevard of Vlissingen and then back to Middelburg via the Jaagpad, just in time for sundowners.
Country house Ter Hooge offers beautiful scenery just outside Middelburg. You will find Ter Hooge castle here, which is still inhabited. A short but scenic hiking trail runs through the park, which was rebuilt after World War II. So, put on your hiking boots and let's go!
This beautiful hiking trail leads you through Walcheren along the Canal. The area is known for its meadow birds and wintering geese. You can enjoy a stroll along the former towpath, which is now a 4 km long hiking trail between Middelburg and Veere.
Walk through the center of Middelburg and rediscover the past. The heritage route spans 4.2 kilometers and takes you back to the time in which Middelburg, along with Amsterdam, was the largest trading town in the Netherlands. Take your time and soak up all the details. Did you notice the skeletons on the Oostkerk, for example? This route offers plenty of opportunities if you want to sit and enjoy a cup of coffee or a bite to eat.
Walk along the former defense bastions of Middelburg. Now filled with greenery and an oasis of calm, but in the old days, this winding route protected us from outside invaders. Take a blanket and a picnic basket and find a nice spot in the sun. On this route, you will pass two of the four windmills in Middelburg. Dog lovers please note: dogs are allowed on this route.
Just remember to clean up after your dog!
If you leave Middelburg by bike and head towards Veere, you will pass by the pastures and mounds in the direction of the dunes. Past picturesque Veere and through the woods, you will arrive on the biggest beach of Walcheren. Welcome to the Vrouwenpolder: a spot that attracts sunbathers, water sports enthusiasts and day-trippers alike! On your way back to Middelburg, you will already be able to see Lange Jan beckoning to you from Gapinge.
You can go for a quick swim and we will see you back at the terrace for a drink!
